Causes of Highs and Lows
Hyperglycaemia
(too high blood glucose levels)
Hypoglycaemia
(too low blood glucose levels)
Too little or poorly timed oral medication
Too much or poorly timed insulin or diabetes medications/pills
Too much food especially sweet food or drinks or food high in carbohydrates
Not eating regularly or eating less than usual
Poorly timed or irregular meals
Eating at irregular hours, missing or skipping meals
Less exercise or physical activity than usual
Emotional stress
More exercise or physical or poorly timed exercise
Emotional stress
Medication is bad (it was frozen, got too hot, or is too old)
Drinking alcohol on an empty stomach
Illness such as fever, colds, flu or surgery
Usually slow onset (days or months)
Usually sudden onset (hours or minutes)
Cold, clammy skin with sweating
Fatigue or extreme tiredness
Numbness or tingling (in fingers and toes)
Frequent and persistent Infection
Confusion, nervousness, or irritability
Convulsions, night sweats
High level of ketones in your urine
